THE FIRST CHAPTER

INTRODUCTION

The context of the research

New forms of media that enable users to participate in real-time conversation are often referred to as "social media." The broadcast period and the interactive epoch are typically seen as two distinct phases in the history of media. It was common for one institution like a radio or television station or newspaper company or film production studio to disseminate messages to a big audience during the broadcasting period of media. It was common for media comments to be inaccessible, delayed, and unpersonal. Personal letters, phone calls, or photocopied family newsletters were the most common means of establishing touch with the outside world. By making it easier for people to communicate on a large scale, digital and mobile technologies have produced a new media age in which interactivity is at the center of the functions of new media. To communicate with a huge group of people in real time was now possible. Citizens and consumers used to be unable to speak freely, but now they are able to share their ideas with a wide audience. People today have more options for media consumption than ever before, thanks to low-cost and widely available technology. Instead of depending on a small number of news outlets, they may now access a wide range of sources and engage in discussion with others through message boards. One of the primary drivers of this ongoing evolution is the widespread use of social media.

Regardless matter whether they are mobile or desktop, all types of social media rely on a digital platform. It's important to note, however, that not all digital information can be considered social media. Two characteristics characterize social media. To begin with, social media platforms allow for some kind of interaction with the user community in question. A passive view of what other people are doing on social media networks like Facebook isn't fully passive. At the very least, it is necessary to create a profile that makes it possible to begin a relationship. Unlike traditional media, which does not allow for personal accounts, social media allows users to create their own. Because social media are participatory in nature, they stimulate interaction, which is consistent with their nature. Friends, family, and acquaintances may all be involved in this relationship, as can new acquaintances who have similar interests or even share the same acquaintance group. It's not uncommon to see new social media platforms becoming less noticed and more expected as they become more integrated into people's personal and professional lives.

The research question

On June 4, 2021, the Nigerian government imposed a ban on Twitter. Entrepreneurs and investors are once again pondering the impact of politics and abrupt regulation on conducting business in Nigeria after another significant government pronouncement. In February, Nigeria's Central Bank imposed a ban on transactions using cryptocurrencies. One of the most widely-used social networking platforms for anything from crowdsourcing pro bono attorneys to identifying missing individuals is being shut down this time around. The Cowrywise team was contacted by Silicon Valley tech entrepreneur and angel investor Sahil Lavingia on January 11 of this year. He had heard about the savings and wealth management firm and wanted to become involved, so he contacted the company on Twitter. Cowrywise raised $3 million in pre-seed funding in under two weeks and two days after that. Involved investors included Lavingia and Quona Capital, a worldwide investment business. “The power of Twitter,” Lavingia declared after the announcement. "This direct message came at the best time..." Cowrywise's CEO, Razaq Ahmed, said this. In a bygone era, acquiring money for a company in Africa required long-distance trips. After hearing tales of fictitious businesses and phantom Nigerian princes, investors felt compelled to visit startups in person, examine the chemistry between them and the founders, and interact with actual consumers. Investing in Nigeria now will only cost you one DM in 2021. That's not to say that this hasn't come under attack. In this manner, the world community's perception of Nigeria has changed, and it has also given the incorrect signal to foreign investors, who now believe they cannot start a digital firm in Nigeria, as in Ghana, where Twitter's CEO opted to locate the company's African headquarters. That Nigeria does not have a genuinely democratic government that respects basic fundamental rights like freedom of expression is a clear message to the world community and IT investors alike.

The study's goals.

The following are the study's key goals:

To determine why Twitter is being blocked in Nigeria.

In order to determine the impact of the Twitter ban on Nigerian technology investors

Aim: To find out how the Twitter ban affects Nigerian users

whether the Twitter ban can be overturned and if Nigeria can entice foreign tech investors

Inquiry-based concerns

Aims and Objectives

What makes this research so important is because it:

Career women in Nigeria's Lagos state will be the focus of this research, which aims to learn how they cope with stress.

Researchers' results will surely benefit government agencies, corporations, and academic institutions.

Subject matter and Extent of the Investigation

The impact of Twitter's prohibition on foreign investors in Nigeria is the subject of this research. Thus, the scope of this research would be confined to Twitter users in the state of Lagos. Nigeria

The study's limitations are discussed.

Several considerations limited the scope of this investigation:

just like any other research, ranging from unavailability of needed accurate materials on the topic under study, inability to get data

It was difficult for the researcher to get the necessary materials and to print and collate surveys because of a lack of funds.

Time factor: time factor pose another constraint since having to shuttle between writing of the research and also engaging in other academic work making it uneasy for the researcher

Operational definition of terms

Effect: a change which is a result or consequence of an action or other cause

Twitter: give a call consisting of repeated light tremulous sounds.
